| Bichon Frise |
I
have raised Bichon Frise’s for 16 years. I did not start out
thinking “Ok, I am going to raise Bichon Frise”, but it
just happened over the years. I was looking around for a pet to replace
my son’s dog that we had to give up when we moved to Charlotte.
My son wanted a dog really bad but he and his brother had allergies
and finding the right dog for them was pretty difficult. I remembered
one of friends had a dog from France that did not shed and loved to
play, it was a little Bichon Frise. I started looking for one. It
was hard to convince the breeders that two little boys could take
care of and not hurt this little ball of fur, but we did. It did not
hurt that I was a stay at home Mom and the puppy would be under my
constant supervision and we had a fenced yard. That was how we got
“Panda,” I told my boys when we went to see her that we
were only going to look, we would not be bringing her home, but “Panda”
ended up coming home with us. She was their “sister” and
our baby for 13 and a half years and what a pleasure she was. Since
“Panda” we have raised and placed many Bichons to loving
families. They become family members to their new owners and give
lots of joy, love and devotion for many, many years.
Each Bichon has his/hers own personality but all should be loving and sweet. When I have a new litter, it is constant hands on with lots of loving and kisses everyday, till they go to their new homes. My litters are raised in my house just a few feet away from the kitchen where I can keep a close eye on them. My last litter was almost completely potty trained by the time the new owners took them home. It was a lot of work but I knew the puppies would be better off starting young and knowing what to expect at their new homes. Bichons are smart dogs. If new owners are not careful, the Bichon will be the one training the dog owner, not the owner training the dog.
My first objective in placing my Bichons is to find the right mix
for everyone. If I feel that the dog and owners won't match, I don't
let the puppies go. I prefer not to sell the puppies to families with
very small children. It is too much to ask of both a baby and a puppy
to know all the limits with each other. Older children, ages 5 and
6 years usually do better. I have had mother dogs stand between the
prospective owners and their puppies and not let the people touch
their babies. I have to go on the dog's instinct in this case and
know that she is sensing something that I am not.
